5K Runner Categories - Register here before Tuesday, December 3rd at 12pm:

Running Buddy: If you know a girl participating in Girls on the Run or Heart & Sole, you can be a Running Buddy! As a parent, guardian, or family friend, you support a participant throughout the entire 5K by running or walking alongside them, providing positive reinforcement throughout the entire course. Running buddies must be 16 years or older.

5K Runner: Younger siblings and friends are encouraged to join in on the fun and may participate as a 5K runner. This category is also great for any other adult and youth participants who would like to run this fun, non-timed 5K.

*If you are interested in volunteering at the Girls on the Run NYC 5K as a General Volunteer (non-running capacity) or Sparkle Runner, visit our volunteer registration page for more information.

What to Wear to the 5K!

  • We encourage you to wear your Program Shirt or Coach Shirt (for program participants), or any GOTR gear or fun items for our community participants! You can visit our GOTR Shop at the 5K to purchase fun Girls on the Run merchandise too.

Volunteer with Girls on the Run NYC for the end-of-season 5K Celebration!

The Girls on the Run NYC 5K celebrates our program participants and their 10-week season of learning about the importance of taking care of our emotional and physical health. As girls from across the city come together to achieve their goals on 5K day, they depend on volunteers like you to help them shine! All volunteers must complete a background check (paid for by GOTR NYC).

7:30am Arrival - Field Team & Finish Line Support Team:
Field Team volunteers setup and break down team site flags, where all teams gather with their coaches at the start of the event. This team then transitions to manage our exciting start and finish line, supporting our girls as they complete the 5K & guiding them safely back to their coaches.

In this role, some heavy lifting will be required. You can expect to assemble team flags, move sandbags, hand out food after runners/walkers cross the finish line, and direct coaches and participants to their team flag. Anticipated end time for this shift is 12:30pm.

8:00am Arrival - Registration Team & Activity Stations Team:
Registration volunteers help check-in runners then cheer on the course once the 5K run/walk begins. Activity station volunteers help generate excitement for the girls and families with fun activities before the 5K begins, and they also support bag check and the GOTR Shop.

In these roles, you will interact with participants, runners, and families. You can expect to support runners in registering for the event, hand out runner giveaways, set up tables and signs for the station you are working at, and give your biggest smiles as you'll be first first people who participants, runners, and families interact with! *Bonus if you are fluent in another language! Anticipated end time for this shift is 12:30pm.

9:00am Arrival - Course Marshal Team:
Course Marshal volunteers serve as cheerleaders along the course, supporting girls, their running buddies, and all 5K participants! They help to ensure the safety of all participants, and may assist with handing out water to participants on the course.

In this role, you may need to walk up to 1.5 miles. You can expect to write inspirational messages with sidewalk chalk, hold cheer signs, warn cyclists that a 5K is happening, keep the course clear of any debris, and generally be a positive presence for the event! Anticipated end time for this shift is 12:30pm.

Place me anywhere!:
You're available to arrive as early as 7:30am or as late as 9:00am. One of the above descriptions will apply. You're happy to be placed where you're needed most!

Sparkle Runner:
You want to cheer for & support GOTR participants as you run/walk/skip/hop alongside them at the 5K! This is perfect for anyone wanting to give their time and energy out on the course. Sparkle Runners meet with the Sparkle Host between 9:30am and 10am on 5K day to prepare for the run/walk. Registration fee is $35, and the registration fee helps make this day happen!

Adult 5K volunteer cheers for GOTR participants

True

The course for a 5K is 3.1 miles.

As a reminder, this is a fun, celebratory event for our participants and not a competitive race. While our fastest 5K participants will complete the course in 25 minutes, most cross the finish line in 30-50 minutes. Everyone who participates is encouraged to walk, roll, push, run or skip at their happy pace!

No! There is no early bib pickup. Please pick up your bib on 5K day!

First, we understand that life happens, and circumstance might make it impossible to attend.

We strongly encourage that all participants attend and complete the 5K, as it is the goal that teams are preparing for all season long! It’s the ultimate opportunity to build confidence through accomplishment. Remember, this is the first 5K event for many – including coaches, participants, friends and family members. We are in it together!

For safety reasons, every participant must wear a race bib (provided by the council). Our council ensures every participant has a running buddy, and only critical 5K volunteers have access to confidential information.

To ensure every participant crosses the finish line, we monitor the course and conduct head counts. Our council has a safety plan in place, which trains staff and volunteers on how to respond during an emergency or incident.

A Running Buddy is an individual designated by the council or by the parent/guardian to complete the 5K alongside a program participant during the 5K event, for the entire duration of the course.

Yes! This is encouraged! This is a great way to accomplish a goal together.

Every 17 & under runner who completes the 5K will receive a medal.

Yes! Family, friends and community members outside of our program can participate in the event, but must register.

Yes. All 5K registration forms include liability waivers.
